The Soul in Depression

June 2, 2009

2197697810_56ddf04774It’s not fair. You try to outrun depression.  And as long as you keep busy, you seem to stay ahead of it.  But when you stop, it catches you like a heat wave.  And once again, you are a drooping wax figure.

One in ten Americans, and even more dramatically, about one in four women, will experience clinical depression at some point in their lives.  In this Speaking of Faith podcast, Krista Tippett takes an intimate look at the spiritual dimensions of this illness and its aftermath.

My favorite quotes:

“The opposite of depression is not happiness.  It is vitality.  In a life of vitality, even pain has its place.”

“You seem to look upon depression as the hand of an enemy trying to crush you.  Do you think you could see it instead as the hand of a friend pressing you down onto ground on which it is safe to stand?”
